Room Integrity Test – Door Fan Test

Room Integrity Testing, also known as a Door Fan Test, is used to evaluate the airtightness of enclosures protected by gaseous fire suppression systems. The test helps determine whether the protected enclosure can retain the extinguishing agent for the required period of time.

FSS Proje Mühendislik performs room integrity tests using Retrotec equipment. The test evaluates leakage characteristics of the protected enclosure and provides an estimated retention time based on the measured results and the applicable test parameters.

Why Is Room Integrity Testing Important?

Gaseous fire suppression systems are designed to maintain the required concentration of extinguishing agent within the protected enclosure for a specified period of time.

If excessive leakage is present, the extinguishing agent may escape from the enclosure too quickly. This can reduce the effectiveness of the suppression system and may prevent the required concentration from being maintained.

Room integrity testing helps identify the leakage characteristics of the enclosure and provides information about its ability to retain the extinguishing agent.

How Is a Door Fan Test Performed?

During a Door Fan Test, a calibrated fan is installed in a suitable doorway of the protected enclosure.

The fan is used to pressurize and depressurize the enclosure. The resulting pressure differences and airflow measurements are recorded by the test equipment.

The measured data is analyzed using the relevant software to estimate the enclosure leakage and the expected retention time of the extinguishing agent.

The test takes into consideration the characteristics of the protected enclosure and the applicable test parameters.

What Does the Test Evaluate?

A room integrity test can provide information about:

  • Required protection height
  • The suitability of the enclosure for gaseous fire suppression

The test results are documented in a technical report.

Leakage Detection

If excessive leakage is identified during the test, the leakage points can be investigated using smoke/fog visualization.

This method can help locate leakage around areas such as:

  • Door bottoms and door frames
  • Cable penetrations
  • Cable trays
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Wall and ceiling junctions
  • Dampers and ventilation openings
  • Other construction gaps and penetrations

Smoke/fog visualization is a supplementary leak detection method and does not replace the Door Fan Test.

Points to Be Considered

For an accurate room integrity test, the protected enclosure should be prepared before testing.

Important points include:

  • Doors, dampers and other openings should be in their normal protected condition.
  • Unnecessary openings and penetrations should be properly sealed.
  • Cable and pipe penetrations should be checked.
  • Raised floors and suspended ceilings should be considered where they form part of the protected enclosure.
  • Ventilation systems and pressure relief arrangements should be evaluated according to the system configuration.
  • Test equipment should have valid calibration documentation.
  • The test should be performed according to the applicable standard, project requirements and system configuration.

The purpose is to verify whether changes to the enclosure have affected its airtightness.
