Introduction

Leak detection and visualization can be used as a supplementary method during room integrity testing to help identify leakage points in protected enclosures.

FSS Proje Mühendislik uses smoke/fog visualization when required to help locate air leakage areas in rooms protected by gaseous fire suppression systems.

Why Is Leak Detection Important?

A gaseous fire suppression system relies on the protected enclosure being sufficiently airtight to retain the extinguishing agent for the required period of time.

Even relatively small leakage points can affect the performance of the enclosure. Identifying and correcting leakage areas can therefore be an important part of maintaining the integrity of the protected room.

Smoke/fog visualization allows air movement through leakage points to be observed and helps identify areas that may require corrective sealing.

How Does Smoke/Fog Visualization Work?

During or following a room integrity test, smoke/fog can be introduced into the protected enclosure.

The pressure difference created during the test causes air to move through leakage paths. The movement of the smoke/fog can make these air paths visible.

This method can help identify leakage locations that may not be immediately visible during a standard visual inspection.

Common Leakage Locations

Leakage can occur at many different points within a protected enclosure.

Common areas include:

  • Door bottoms and door frames
  • Cable penetrations
  • Cable trays
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Wall and ceiling junctions
  • Ventilation openings
  • Dampers
  • Construction joints
  • Other gaps and penetrations

The actual leakage locations depend on the construction and configuration of each protected enclosure.

Leak Detection During Room Integrity Testing

Smoke/fog visualization can be particularly useful when a room integrity test indicates excessive leakage.

The test measurements provide information about the overall leakage characteristics of the enclosure, while visualization can help identify where the leakage is occurring.

This combination can make corrective sealing work more targeted and practical.

Retrotec Room Integrity Testing

FSS Proje Mühendislik performs room integrity tests using Retrotec equipment.

The Door Fan Test measures the pressure and airflow characteristics of the enclosure and provides data for evaluating its leakage and estimated retention performance.

When required, smoke/fog visualization can be used together with the test to assist in locating leakage points.

Supplementary Testing Method

Smoke/fog visualization is a supplementary leak detection method. It does not replace the Room Integrity Test / Door Fan Test.

The Door Fan Test provides quantitative measurements of enclosure leakage and retention performance, while smoke/fog visualization helps identify the physical locations of potential leakage paths.

Both methods can therefore provide complementary information during an investigation.

Identification of Corrective Actions

Once leakage locations have been identified, the relevant areas can be inspected and corrective sealing measures can be considered.

Depending on the leakage location, corrective action may involve sealing:

  • Cable and pipe penetrations
  • Door gaps
  • Construction joints
  • Unsealed openings
  • Ventilation-related openings
  • Other identified leakage paths

After corrective work, a Room Integrity Test can be repeated to evaluate the effect of the corrective measures.

Reporting

Findings identified during the leakage investigation can be documented together with the room integrity test results.

The technical documentation may include:

  • Test conditions
  • Test equipment
  • Measured values
  • Leakage observations
  • Identified leakage locations
  • Photographic documentation where applicable
  • Technical observations
  • Recommendations for corrective action
